GOAL SETTING: PART 1

Updated: Jan 3, 2019

Happy New Year's Eve and welcome to the first of four Mindful Mondays dedicated to mindful goal setting in 2019. Be sure to download your first goal setting worksheet at the bottom.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON GOAL SETTING

A new year is upon us, and with it, a clean slate to try new things, dream new dreams and realize even more of our potential. This clean slate, by the way, is also available to us every minute of every day ;) But there is something extra fresh and motivating about the start of a new year, don't you think?

I hear a lot of talk these days about not setting resolutions, or not making big plans to change all the things at the start of a new year. And I get it. People are tired of hearing and thinking they aren't good enough, fit enough, rich enough, accomplished enough, organized enough, enough, enough, enough....

So today, I want to offer a fresh perspective on goal setting.

My friend, goal setting is for you and YOU ALONE. Goals become something wonderful when they are born from the space of total worthiness. This means, you are worthy of love, belonging and connection right here, right now. There is nothing you can do to add to or subtract from your worthiness. You were born worthy. You ARE, forever worthy.

So! Goal setting then, is just to see what is possible. To see what kind of fun you can have and growth you can experience in this lifetime. Dreaming big dreams is to go inside yourself, take inventory of what makes you tick and come back to the surface with a list of 'wouldn't it be cool if...?' items.

Goal setting, from this healthy perspective, is purely for you and your personal growth. But perhaps, like so many of us, you've looked begrudgingly at goal setting because of what you were making it mean? Maybe, like I used to, you subconsciously attached your worthiness to your goals & accomplishments?

Enter Brené Brown and her sage wisdom: wisdom that truly changed my life.

“Nothing has transformed my life more than realizing that it’s a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands.”

And I'd like to add to this. It is a waste of time to evaluate your worthiness by weighing:

your job

your home

your income

your weight

your net worth

your accomplishments

your children

your spouse

your [anything]

against the reaction of the people in the stands.

GOAL SETTING IS FOR YOU AND YOU ALONE ♥︎

If you've been reading along for a while you may remember my Goals & Gremlins post. I encourage you to revisit it as you mull over your goals for this year. It contains great encouragement about the importance of goal setting (from the right mental space) and the obstacles you can expect as you pursue those goals.

For now, I want to leave you with this:

Goal setting is the most brilliant way to take inventory of what makes you uniquely you. The act of pursuing goals calls you to RISE UP to the very best version of who YOU are. The pursuit of goals from a space of worthiness is one of the BEST ways to strengthen your mind and grow into the highest thinking version of yourself.

Friend, sign me up! And I know you're here because you care about empowerment and personal growth too.  So I'm going to go ahead and assume you're ready to get to work as well :)

Over the next 4 weeks I'm going to be walking you through a mindful approach to goal setting. Lets take January of 2019 to get clear on what goal setting means, what goals matter to you and how to pursue them meaningfully with mindfulness ♥︎  I've got your back this year and I'll be here along the journey to encourage you with tools and practices to help you stay the course.

You ready to do this?! If so, please click the worksheet below for today's resource.

We will jump off of this exercise with next week's content.

Have a beautiful week my friend and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
